What is TCU Remapping?

What is TCU and what is its application?
What maps exist in TCU? What are the advantages of TCU remapping?
How many models of TCU are there?
How much does TCU tuning/TCU remapping cost?
And so on...
These are the questions that we will answer in this article.
What is TCU?
First, let’s provide a simple definition: Transmission Control Unit. Keep this simple definition in mind so we can refer back to it later after the explanations.
As you know, there are generally four types of transmissions in cars:
- MT
- AT
- CVT
- DCT
Aside from MT (Manual Transmission) gearboxes, which operate completely mechanically, the other three types of gearboxes mentioned are equipped with TCU. In fact, it is better to say that 'they can have TCU' because in some ECU models, such as Bosch MG1CS ECUs, TCU maps are integrated into the ECU.
Now, let’s return to the simple definition we provided at the beginning of our paragraph to complete it: as you are familiar with the ECU, which is essentially the brain of the car and its engine control unit, the task of controlling the transmission (in non-manual gearboxes) is also handled by TCU.
What maps exist in TCU? What are the pros of TCU remapping?
In TCU, there are tables such as shifting, both upshift and downshift, timing, limiters, and so on. By adjusting these tables, you can increase the shift speed between gears, make your transmission's response faster (improving the delay issue in automatic transmissions), reduce or modify the torque limiter, facilitate launch control, and even improve acceleration.
How many models of TCU are there?
In terms of mechanical mechanisms, there are generally four types of transmissions, which we mentioned in the first part. However, the question of how many TCU models exist actually refers to the different models of TCU, including ZF, Temic, Bosch, and Continental.
You might be wondering, "What about DSG, DKG, and VGS?"
In fact, these are newer models derived from the same four categories mentioned above. For example, DKG stands for the German abbreviation (Doppel Kupplung Getriebe) for DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) gearboxes, or DSG is a specific type of DCT developed by Volkswagen. VGS gearboxes (And also MCT) are mostly used in Mercedes Benz vehicles and represent a type of automatic transmission. So, in essence, all these names refer to specific operating types of gearboxes, not TCU brands.

FAQs:
Can TCU remapping be performed on all cars?
TCU remapping can be done on vehicles with automatic gearboxes that have TCU and do not have any mechanical issues.
Which vehicles are more suitable for TCU tuning?
As mentioned, if the vehicle has TCU, TCU tuning can be performed! However, we have had amazing experiences with vehicles from the VAG group (especially Audi and Porsche), Mercedes Benz, and BMW.
How much time is needed for TCU remapping?
In most cases, it takes about the same time as ECU tuning, averaging around 20 to 40 minutes.
What are TCU reading tools and TCU writing tools?
This entirely depends on the type of your vehicle and its TCU, and you should check it in your compatibility list of tools. However, generally, Autotuner, Flex, Newtrasdata, and Kess3 are good tools for reading and writing TCU.
