This article is about TRW EMS 2 and EMS 2.2 the TRW EMS 2 was applied in various models of Euro 4 versions mostly produced from year 2005 until 2009 including Volvo trucks, Renault trucks, and Mack trucks. From 2009 to 2013 TRW EMS 2.2 was used in Euro 5 versions of Volvo trucks, Renault trucks, Mack trucks and some models of Nissan UD trucks.

For OBD read you can connect your tool to the vehicles OBD port and read and write the file if your tool supports Bench mode either you can remove the ECU and read and write it on Bench however some companies like alientech have "Cable for Volvo TRW Bench connection" which you can purchase and connect them to the ECU without needing to dismount the ECU.

Trucks with TRW EMS2 are mostly Euro 4 thus they only have Diesel particulate filter and EGR valve. but later trucks with TRW EMS2.2 which produced since 2010 were equipped with SCR system and in earlier versions mostly until 2011, the SCR system was controlled by the ECU. 
Later trucks from 2012 or some 2013 models with TRW EMS2.2 equipped with ACM. 

EGR removal solution

EGR valve location

In volvo d13 versions which share many parameters with mack mx8 and de13 from Renault. The egr vale actuator is located near the turbocharger. 
If you check the below picture the EGR valve cooler is located below the turbocharger and the egr valve itself is connected to the EGR valve cooler and it’s next to the turbocharger.

In volvo trucks VN series the DPF is located on the left side of the truck and after removing the panel you can get access to the diesel particulate filter with the sensors connected to it and SCR system.
