The xDrive30d and xDrive35d variants have a 3.0 inline 6, M57 diesel engine which is widely used in diesel platforms including E90 3 series, E60 5 series, E63 6 series , E65 7 series, E70 X5, and E71 X6. 

There are multiple versions of the M57 engine which has different characteristics depending on the year of manufacture. Early models were equipped with M57D30O1 with Bosch EDC16C31 ecu and were produced until late 2005. Later came with M57D30O2 with EDC16CP35 ECU and M57D30T2 and EDC16C35 ECU for US versions.

The difference is the US version with Engine code: M57D30T2 and EDC16C35 ECU have Electrically operated EGR valve, Swirl flaps, and have low pressure EGR valve (on BMW X5 E70 model only).

In engine codes M57D30O1& M57D30O2 with EDC16C31 and EDC16CP35 control units used a vacuum actuator (vacuum pod) with rods connected to the swirl flaps.The US version with engine code M57D30T2 with EDC16C35 ECU used electrical motors connected to swirl flaps.The swirl flap actuator plug is located beneath the intake manifold, below the map sensor.
